In traditional partner dancing,Ā men typically leadĀ andĀ women followāthe lead initiates the movement, and the follow responds. But at Dancer University,Ā dance is for everyone. š« Youāre free to choose whichever role you feel most comfortable in, regardless of gender or experience.
In fact, many of our students eventually learnĀ both rolesĀ to become more versatile and confident dancers on the social floor. š
InĀ group classes, we rotate partners regularly so you can improve by dancing with different people. If youād like to switch roles or try something new, just let us knowāweāre here to support your growth every step of the way. š«±š«²
Your first class at Dancer University will beĀ fun, beginner-friendly, and zero-pressure. š Our instructors are trained to guide you step-by-step so you feel confidentāeven if youāve never danced before.
Hereās what a typical class looks like:
-
š„ A short warm-up to get your body moving
-
š§ Clear instruction on foundational steps and partner technique
-
š Partner work (with rotating partners unless you prefer to stay with your own)
-
š A welcoming, supportive group of students
-
š¶ Great music, positive energy, and lots of smiles
You donāt need special shoes, prior experience, or a partner. JustĀ wear something comfortable,Ā bring a water bottle, andĀ show up ready to have fun. Weāll take care of the rest.
Wear something that allows you to move, stretch, and turn comfortablyāthink workout clothes, dancewear, or anything breathable. š©°š Thereās no dress code, but we recommendĀ avoiding shoes with heavy grip or rubber soles, as they can make it difficult to spin.
š„æĀ Shoes with suede or leather solesĀ offer better control on smooth floors, but they canāt be worn outside and typically require changing at the studio.
For most students, we recommendĀ Fuego dance shoes. Theyāre stylish, sneaker-like, and designed to spin on almost any surfaceāperfect forĀ salsa,Ā bachata,Ā kizomba, andĀ tango.
šļøĀ Use code: DancerUĀ to getĀ 10% offĀ your order at Fuego.
We also recommend bringing:
-
š§ A water bottle to stay hydrated
-
š§» A small towel or extra shirt if you tend to sweat
-
š¬ļø Gum or mints to keep your breath fresh
-
š§¼ Deodorant (and a reminder to shower or freshen up beforehand)
-
š Most importantly: a positive attitude and a willingness to learn!

Each dance style has its own unique origin, rhythm, and expression:
šŗĀ Salsa
Salsa dancing originated in the Caribbeanāparticularly Cuba and Puerto Ricoāand later evolved in New York, blending Afro-Cuban roots with jazz influences. Known for fast footwork, spins, and dynamic partner work,Ā salsa classesĀ are high-energy, rhythm-driven, and incredibly fun.
šĀ Sensual Bachata
Bachata began in the Dominican Republic as a romantic, guitar-driven street dance. Over time, it evolved into styles likeĀ Sensual Bachata, which originated in Spain.Ā Sensual bachata classesĀ focus on body isolations, fluid movement, and musical connection, blending traditional steps with influences from Brazilian zouk.
šĀ Tango
Tango was born in the late 19th century in Argentina and Uruguay, shaped by African, European, and local traditions. Itās dramatic, precise, and emotionally expressive. In ourĀ tango lessons, youāll develop posture, balance, and a powerful sense of musical phrasing.
šĀ Kizomba
Kizomba originated in Angola in the 1980s, evolving from semba and zouk music. Known for its smooth, flowing movement and strong partner connection,Ā kizomba classesĀ focus on grounded control and subtle rhythm, offering a calm and connected experience.
You may have heard thatĀ bachataĀ is one of the easier dances to start withāand thatās often true forĀ beginner bachata classes, which focus on timing, basic steps, and partner connection. But once you step intoĀ sensual bachata, it becomes more physically and technically demanding. š« Body isolations, control, and musical interpretation require time and guidanceābut our instructors are among theĀ best in Los AngelesĀ and are highly skilled at helping you build the right foundation.
SalsaĀ can feel fast at first, especially with its turns and spins, but much of the footwork becomes intuitive with practice. OurĀ beginner salsa classesĀ are designed to help you build rhythm, confidence, and muscle memory from day one. š
KizombaĀ is slow and smooth, with a deep focus on connection and timing. Itās beginner-accessible in its tempo, but it also asks you to develop subtle control and sensitivity to the music. š
TangoĀ is more structured and detail-oriented. It emphasizes posture, precision, and musical phrasing. While it can feel technical at first, itās a powerful and elegant dance for those who enjoy depth and nuance. š
Still unsure? We recommend watchingĀ social dance videosĀ or checking out ourĀ YouTube channelĀ to see real dancers in action at socialsānot performances.
The best way to decide is toĀ listen to the musicĀ andĀ watch social dance videos. šµ You can search YouTube for phrases likeĀ āsalsa social dancing,ā ābachata social dancing,āĀ orĀ ākizomba social dancingāĀ to get a feel for each style. Be sure to look forĀ real social dancing, not performancesāthose often include pre-planned choreography that may look great on stage but isnāt leadable in a social setting.
Ask yourself:Ā Which music do I connect with the most?Ā If you love the music, youāll love learning the dance. ššŗ
At Dancer University, we offer beginner-friendlyĀ group classesĀ inĀ salsa,Ā sensual bachata,Ā kizomba, andĀ tango, so you can confidently start with whichever one excites you most.
